Exclusive - Westbrook Soccer Dome Proposal Falls Flat

Image
The development permit application for a soccer dome and parking lot adjacent to the Westbrook LRT Station has been withdrawn by the applicants. In a call to the City of Calgary's Planning and Development department, this writer was told that the application had been withdrawn by Matco Development on April 18, 2018.  There was no reason given for the withdrawal. (Edit. The writer later saw a copy of an email sent to the KGCA and other local CA's indicating that the application had been denied by administration) Matco purchased the land from the City of Calgary in 2014 and had pledged to develop it as part of the purchase of the property.  Matco however says it had to deviate from the original plan and timeline due to economic factors at the time the development permit application was filed. I sent e-mails to Matco Development and Ward 8 Councillor Evan Woolley asking for comment earlier this afternoon, however there had been no response from either as of publication....

Tuesday, April 24/2018 - Finally Some Signs Of Spring.

Image
It was a great day for a walk, so I decided to head towards Shaganappi Point Golf Course to see how things were looking.  It was great to see the driving range is now open, and from the way things look, golfers could be hitting the fairways in the next 2-3 weeks. Robin shmobin, this is the first real sign of spring. The first blades of green grass begin to appear. Most of the snow is gone but there are still pockets here and there. Give it a couple more days like today. An island of green in a sea of brown. This lonely little sandwich board along Bow Trail. Thought I'd give a local business a shout out. Lots of traffic goes past this sign, but I think most drivers would miss this. Check them out. they're on FB and have a website as well. Google it.  I'm not doing ALL the work for you.   The last remnants of ice are now more like slush on the ponds. As close as I was able to get to the driving range without...

Friday, April 20/2018 - Thaw Brings Scenes of Nuclear Apocalypse to Mall Parking Lot.

Image
As the mountains of snow begin to melt around the city, the trash and detritus that was swept up along with that snow begins to rear its ugly head.  Seen up close, these piles look like the remnants of a nuclear apocalypse.  Scenes like this are popping up in parking lots across the city, and no doubt as we enter the clean-up phase of the '17-'18 Winter That Just Wouldn't End.  I'm posting this on the day after I took theses pics, Saturday, and the wind is HOWLING.  Look for a lot of this debris to be blowing through your community today. There are always shopping carts in these mounds. Blecchh!! It's like there is a shopping cart in every other pile. I've always wondered what the story was behind the abandoned or thrown out foot-wear that you see from time to time in various places.  These work boots for instance.

Thusday, April 19th/2018 - Westbrook LRT Station, More Than Just Jehovah's Witnesses Around Today

Image
I went to the library today and something was going on inside the LRT station.  What it was, I wasn't sure. As I enter and look around, I'm getting the sense that this is something artry-fartsy. Yep. I was correct. Someone playing a zither-type instrument. Thankfully the microphone didn't work most of the time. And look, some kind of green energy propaganda. This has Druh Farrell's fingerprints all over it. There was a group representing the Drop-In Centre present. I won't knock them.  They are at least a legitimate charity worthy of my dollar. No Mo Mowing?  What?  Apparently this is low-maintenance grass seed.  What the chair, bicycle, and houseplants have to do with anything is beyond me.  I also don't understand the signs. Is he protesting lawn care? Does he really think "mo" is the correct way of spelling more? I'm very confused. At least it isn't caricatures and the money goes to a good cause. ...

Sunday, April 15/2018 Good Eats Along 17th Avenue

Image
One of the draws of 17th Avenue is its' cafe's and restaurants, and there are plenty of choices between 27th and 37th Streets SW.  Along with the usual fast-food joints, there are a number of lesser known but locally popular places along this stretch to satisfy any palate.  If you ever have the chance, check these places out. Chili Club Thai House - 1904-36th St. SW It doesn't look like much on the outside but the decor is great. Tried it for the fist time last summer and gave it two thumbs up. A must try. Little Lebanon - 3515 17th Ave. SW A chicken shawarma from Little Lebanon makes for an awesome lunch. Made in front of you with fresh ingredients and friendly people serving you. A great alternative to the McD's across the street. Bow Bulgogi House/Korean BBQ - 3515 17th Ave. SW I first tried bulgogi at a Korean place near where I used to work about 20 years ago. For those who've never had it, bulgogi means "fire meat" i...

33rd St and 17th Ave SW Facing North. Spiro's Pizza   Home of the Future Westbrook Station Development...or a Soccer Dome and 400 Stall Parking Lot..... Rosscarrock If you've lived here long enough, you know that by now there are signs on street corners across the city announcing the arrival of Street Cleaning Season.  It was always a welcome sign of spring in Calgary. Not this year.
