Sunday, April 15/2018 Good Eats Along 17th Avenue

One of the draws of 17th Avenue is its' cafe's and restaurants, and there are plenty of choices between 27th and 37th Streets SW.  Along with the usual fast-food joints, there are a number of lesser known but locally popular places along this stretch to satisfy any palate.

If you ever have the chance, check these places out.

Chili Club Thai House - 1904-36th St. SW

It doesn't look like much on the outside but the decor is great. Tried it for the fist time last summer and gave it two thumbs up. A must try.

Little Lebanon - 3515 17th Ave. SW

A chicken shawarma from Little Lebanon makes for an awesome lunch. Made in front of you with fresh ingredients and friendly people serving you. A great alternative to the McD's across the street.

Bow Bulgogi House/Korean BBQ - 3515 17th Ave. SW

I first tried bulgogi at a Korean place near where I used to work about 20 years ago. For those who've never had it, bulgogi means "fire meat" in Korean so what it is is tasty strips of marinated beef or pork grilled to perfection and served in a variety of ways, but usually with rice and/or vegetables. Try it with some Kimchi and Soju (Korea's National Adult Beverage),

 Greco Pizza & George's Lounge - 3511 17th Ave. SW

Having been around for 50 years, Greco Pizza is a well known name in the area.  Serving up delicious greek-style pizza and a great steak san, Greco Pizza is worth a visit.

Sauce Italian Kitchen & Market - 3326 17th Ave. SW

Opening in December of 2015, Sauce has been a great addition to the area. The panini's from the deli are fresh and tasty, though a little bit pricey. It isn't out of line however and you do get what you pay for.  The market isn't huge but you'll find most of the ingredients for an excellent Italian meal here. The coffee's good and I'm dying to try the restaurant for lunch or dinner.

Spiros Pizza & Greek Taverna - 1902 33rd St. SW

Another long established Greek family owned restaurant, Spiros has been in the same location since 1969. Great food, a cozy intimate setting and seasonal specials are good reasons to check out Spiro's. They do a lamb on the spit at Easter and BBQ beef during Stampede that are a hit with meat lovers.

 Joey's Seafood Restaurant - 3220 17th Ave SW

I've always been a fan of Joey's and that continues to this day.  It's home to some of the best fish and chips I've had and probably the best tartar sauce there is bar none. All you can eat Tuesdays is still a big draw and the staff is very friendly. Cheap beer on Thursday nights.
Himalayan Restaurant - 3218 17th Ave. SW

Next door to Joey's, Himalayan underwent a renovation late last year that made the restaurant bigger.  I haven't tried it yet, but it is definitely on my list of place to try.  Nepali cuisine is similar to Indian, using many of the same spices and ingredients and are prepared in a similar manner.  Flat bread is also prominent in Nepali meals as it is in Indian and is available plain, garlic, and coconut varieties. I do like Indian food, so I have a good idea of what to expect and I'm looking forward to the experience.

(A Taste Of) Beirut Bakery - 3210 17th Ave SW

Just down the street from Little Lebanon, Beirut Bakery is another Lebanese offering that doesn't disappoint.  While they serve donair, shawarma and other deli items, it's the baked goods that keep me coming back.  They go great with your morning coffee.

Coffee Cat's Cafe - 2765 17th Ave. SW

I can't be sure of the exact date but Coffee Cats Cafe has been around since the mid-nineties.  I remember thinking at the time that it wouldn't last more that 6 months, a year tops.  More than 20 years later they have more than proved me wrong.  It has managed to find the right mix of good coffee, good food, and occasionally good live jazz now to be a local success.  While it isn't someplace I frequent (been there once, good coffee), I have grown accustomed to it being there. So, check it out if you like coffee....and cats....although it should be noted that there are NO cats roaming around. That's a different place, so if you've come here expecting to have a coffee in the company of some cats, you'll leave greatly disappointed.

Jeanne's Pizza Pantry - 2741 17th Ave. SW

I first tried Jeanne's Pizza a little over 10 years ago, when it opened in a strip mall off of 45th St near the Fire Station and CPS District 2 headquarters.  It was a hit the first time I tried it, and Mel (Melody) made a souvlaki wrap and Greek potatoes to die for.  She relocated to the current location when the city demolished the strip mall to make room for the LRT, and has been making some of the best pizza you'll ever have from this location since 2010.  While the menu's changed a bit over the years, it's still the best pizza you'll ever order.
